Welcome to Venky’s world of point system. What’s that?
When Venky behaves well or does something commendable, I or Vibhu award him points, usually one or two. We use it to our advantage by giving him one point for sleeping with g’parents 😉 Yeah, it’s working! The kid who did not want to leave our bed, now happily trots to grandparents’ room every evening. And we can cut points for bad behavior.
So what does Venky do with them?
He can use it to buy chocolates for himself ( 1 point for a small choc)
He can use it buy toy (5/6 points depending on expense)
He can use it to see animation movies in theatre
And he can use it buy his Rakhi gift 😉
Do we sound like evil parents? 😀 What is great about this point system is that it enforces positive behavior and attitude without any reprimands. “Venky if you continue this, I’ll have to cut your points now.” , works like magic 😀
It is also teaching Venky about money. Now he easily understands the word “expensive”, and looks for cheaper options in the toys. It also teaches him to value his want for something in terms of money. For instance, he usually does not ask for chocolates if he is collecting points for a forthcoming movie, even though they cost him only 1 point.
On the same note, one day, he spotted a candy and jumped with excitement. “Mommy, this is what I had wanted Papa to get me from US.” I checked the price which was Rs. 200. Normally, I would have never bought it for him. But now, I quietly told him that he will have to use 5 points for that to which he agreed and got the candy. He missed the “Krishna and Kans” movie that week but was happy with the candy. So, as a parent it is easier for me to deal with his wants. I would have never known that we would have wanted that candy more than a movie. And without the points, it would have been hard for me make him give up either. I would have probably, simply refused to buy the candy but taken him for the movie. Now, he gets to make that choice and it keeps him happy 🙂
Venky’s negotiation skills are improving too. The movie is for 19 points because he was able to negotiate one point down . He wanted to buy a soft snake for which we asked him to give up 6 points. There were snakes in various colors and some colors had 20% discount. Venky had liked a snake of non discounted color but we asked him to take one from discounted colors. “But you will have to give me one point back if you make me pick up one of those colors.”. And we did! 🙂
Before I close the post, I will have to give the credits for it. None other and my brilliant half 🙂
Go ahead moms! Try it on your five year olds. You’ll be surprised!
